Weihnachtszeit. Ich habe meine Weihnachtsferien im Oman verbracht – ich habe mich gefühlt wie Lawrence of Arabia. Der Oman ist atemberaubend und äusserst sympathisch. Er bietet weit mehr als eine reine Badedestination, und es wäre in der Tat schade, Ferien in einem so schönen und spannenden Land ausschliesslich in einem Liegestuhl zu verbringen. Wir haben Jeep-Fahrten durch die Dünen gemacht, haben in einem Zelt-Hotel übernachtet, sind auf Kamelen in den Sonnenuntergang geritten und haben uns darüber gefreut, wie fortschrittlich und offen dieses arabische Land dank eines sehr weltoffenen Sultans ist. Sowohl das Chedi Muscat als auch das Shangri-La Al Husn sind ausgezeichnete Hotels in dieser Destination.
I spent my christmas holidays in Oman, and I felt like Lawrence of Arabia. Oman is breathtaking, and thanks to a Sultan who has known how to adjust to the 21st century, it is very open and friendly. It is a wonderful destination, the hotels Chedi Muscat and the Shangri-La Al Husn are excellent. Oman has a lot more to offer than its beaches – in fact, it would be pity to see a country with such a long and colourful history and such breathtaking landmarks from a beach chair only. We drove an AWD into the desert, spent the night there in a tent hotel, and rode into the sunset on camelback. I can highly recommend this place.
Messezeit. Bis jetzt bin ich jedes Jahr an die Reisemesse “PowWow” gereist. Heuer war ich zum ersten Mal bei der „kleinen Schwester“, am „Go West Summit“, der in Sacramento in Kaliforien statt fand. Vertreten waren vor allem Anbieter aus dem Mittleren Westen und natürlich dem Westen Amerikas, und ich habe unendlich viel Neues gelernt. Ausserdem habe ich viele tolle Leute kennen gelernt, die uns in Zukunft sicher dabei helfen werden, unsere Touren noch spannender, professioneller und einzigartiger zu machen. Mit dem Nostalgie-Zug durch Colorado? Mit der Harley durch Arizona? Kein Problem – wir haben überall Freunde!
This was my first time at the „Go West Summit“ after having always been to the bigger travel fair „PowWow“. There’s been a lot of interesting news and, even more importantly, many new business friends. We’ve learnt a lot about the Mid West, and the West, of course. Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, California, you name it. We’ve met so many great people who will help to make our tours even more exciting in the future. Thanks, guys!
Napa Valley. Wer nach San Francisco fliegt, bleibt meist in San Francisco. Das ist verständlich, aber auch schade. Denn nur eine Stunde ausserhalb lockt Kalifornien mit unvergleichlicher Landschaft und herrlichem Wein. Wir haben im frisch renovierten „Sonoma Mission Inn“, einem Fairmont-Hotel, gewohnt, dem einzigen Hotel in der Gegend, das eigene Thermalquellen hat und sie auch nutzt. Von Sonoma aus haben wir das Napa Valley erkundet, bei Beringer Wein degustiert und uns den Prozess des Wein Machens erklären lassen, und zu guter Letzt sind wir in den nostaligischen Pullman-Wagen des Dinner-Trains bis nach St. Helena und wieder zurück gefahren. Wir waren bestimmt nicht das letzte Mal in dieser Gegend.
If you fly from Europe into San Francisco, that’s probably where you’ll stay, unless you have a connecting flight. Reasonable, but - there’s so much to see just an hour outside ot San Francisco. We set out to explore the wine region, staying at the beautiful Fairmont Hotel “Sonoma Mission Inn” and taking trips to the Beringer Winery (where they treated us not only to wine tasting, but also to the most terrific lunch you could possibly imagine, and to the Dinner Train that took us to St. Helena and back on nostalgic Pullman cars. We will be back! And we strongly recommend the area to anyone willing to see more of California than the big cities.

In the real world, a musician is on stage, and the audience watches and listens. Thanks to MTI, things are a bit different this coming Friday night: Right before her performance on the Albisgüetli stage, country music star Crystal Gayle will shake hands and chat with a few friends and associates of Maya’s. Albisgüetli 2010. Unglaublich, aber wahr: Das längste Country-Music-Festival der Welt findet in Zürich statt. 38 Konzertdaten von Januar bis März, von Bluegrass über Honkytonk bis zu Texas-Blues. MTI war mit einem Stand anwesend, wir konnten viele interessierte Leute über unsere speziellen Reisen informieren. Natürlich haben sich auch neue Freundschaften ergeben, so habe ich zum Beispiel endlich Daniela Hunziker von Desert Rose kennen gelernt. Ich würde mich freuen, viele meiner „neuen“ Freunde wieder zu sehen oder am Telefon zu hören.
It sounds unbelievable, but it’s nothing but the truth: The world’s longest country music festival does not take place in Nashville, TN, but in Zurich, CH. At the Schützenhaus Albisgütli, to be precise. 38 nights and matinees, loads of people, food and dancing. And of course, we had a booth there. I got to meet friends old and new, and we have been telling everybody that came to see us about our trips to the States. Looking forward to seeing you all at my office, or to talking to you on the phone.
Blues Basel. Man nennt sie auch die kanadische Königin des Blues: Am 25. März wird Rita Chiarelli mit ihrer Band das Volkshaus in Kleinbasel rocken. She’s been dubbed the Canadian queen of the blues, and rightfully so. Rita Chiarelli is high octane, which means she’s right up Maya’s alley.
